Chinese astronauts recently experienced firsthand the dangers posed by space debris. On December 9, two of the crew from the Shenzhou 21 mission completed an eight-hour spacewalk, marked as a pivotal moment for China’s space program.

During their extravehicular activity (EVA), Commander Zhang Lu and astronaut Wu Fei inspected the Shenzhou 20 return capsule. This capsule had sustained damage from a space junk strike, leading to cracks in its windows. Space officials decided it wasn’t safe for astronauts to return through the Earth’s atmosphere using this vehicle.

Instead, the crew returned home on November 14 aboard Shenzhou 21, which had just arrived at the Tiangong space station on Halloween. In a proactive move, China launched the Shenzhou 22 spacecraft with no crew to ensure a safe return for the Shenzhou 21 astronauts once their mission concludes.

Recent statistics highlight the growing concern about space debris. As of 2022, nearly 36,500 pieces of debris larger than 10 centimeters are tracked in Earth’s orbit. This number underscores the need for rigorous safety measures, like bolstering spacecraft shields against potential impacts.

Wu Fei made history during the spacewalk by becoming the youngest Chinese astronaut to perform an EVA, at just 32 years old. This achievement adds to the momentum of China’s ambitious space program and its commitment to exploring new frontiers.

Officials with the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) highlighted that this EVA wasn’t just routine; it was a vital opportunity to strengthen Tiangong’s debris defense systems. The increasing frequency of spacewalks to enhance these protective measures suggests that space agencies are taking the threat of debris more seriously than ever.

Through these efforts, astronauts gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in outer space as well as the importance of international cooperation in space safety and exploration.
