NASA’s Psyche spacecraft is on a fascinating journey. It was launched in October 2023 using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The mission aims to study an unusual metal asteroid called 16 Psyche. Scientists think this asteroid might be the leftover core of a small planet.
Recently, as part of its testing, Psyche turned its cameras back toward Earth. At the time, Earth was about 180 million miles away. The result? A beautiful long-exposure image showing Earth and the moon surrounded by stars.
This image offers a unique view of our planet’s position in the cosmos. The light bouncing off Earth and the moon comes from the sun. The pictures also showcase the performance of Psyche’s twin cameras. One of these cameras is a multispectral imager. It captures various wavelengths of light, helping scientists learn more about 16 Psyche’s composition.
Jim Bell, the lead for the imager at Arizona State University, mentioned, “Next, we may aim for Saturn or the large asteroid Vesta to keep testing our imagers.” Earlier, they also captured images of Jupiter and Mars. Bell humorously described their work as collecting “solar system trading cards” from different celestial bodies.
As Psyche continues its journey, it will make a flyby of Mars in 2026 to gain speed needed to reach 16 Psyche in 2029. This mission could provide insights into the building blocks of our solar system.

This enthusiasm reflects a growing fascination with space exploration, especially as advancements in technology make these missions possible.
