The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is breaking records again. In early 2025, it set out to conquer five famous race tracks. Now, it has a new achievement to boast about.
At Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, a 2026 Corvette ZR1, driven by Canadian racing legend Ron Fellows, shattered the production car record with a time of 1:18.2. This new record beat the previous mark of 1:22.12, which Fellows set in 2023 with the Z06 model.
Fellows knows this track well. As a co-owner and a long-time Corvette racer, he understands what these cars can do. When you let someone with his experience drive a car that pumps out 1,064 horsepower, you’re in for something exciting. The car’s ZTK package also adds extra downforce, helping with speed in turns.
Fellows remarked, “With more downforce, I could attack corners more aggressively. For instance, into Turn 8, I braked at the same spot as with the Z06 but was traveling over 20 miles per hour faster.” This highlights how crucial downforce is in racing.
The ZR1 features a powerful twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 engine, getting from 0-60 mph in just 2.3 seconds. Its downforce package can create up to 1,200 pounds of grip on the track, a remarkable feat for any production car.
This record at Mosport adds to the ZR1’s already impressive list of fast laps, including those at Watkins Glen and Road America. The ZR1X also holds a record at the famous Nurburgring in Germany.
Interestingly, the car that set the record is part of Chevrolet’s new Stars & Steel collection, a nod to the brand’s heritage. This limited-run ZR1 model emphasizes the connection between Corvette and its Canadian roots.
Fellows, also known as the “Magician of Mosport,” has proven that he still has what it takes to push the limits. With the ZR1, Chevrolet showcases a true supercar of North America, continuing a legacy that began over 70 years ago.
As of 2023, Corvette was still among the top contenders in the supercar market. According to a recent survey, 69% of car enthusiasts believe the ZR1’s performance will keep it relevant in an increasingly competitive landscape. With electric vehicles on the rise, the ongoing interest in traditional performance cars signifies that the ZR1 will maintain its allure for years to come.
