When scientists use underwater cameras called BRUVS (baited remote underwater video systems), they expect the unexpected. Recently, the National Geographic Pristine Seas team set up one of these cameras near Niulakita, a tiny island in Tuvalu, and witnessed something truly fascinating. A curious octopus decided to tug on the camera, causing it to shift from its original spot. They shared this surprising moment on Instagram.

Chris Thompson, a marine ecologist with National Geographic, explained what happened. “In the footage, we see a day octopus (Octopus cyanea) pulling the bait canister towards a rock. It investigates the canister with its arms,” he noted. This shows just how intelligent octopuses are, using unique ways to explore their surroundings.

Scientists have discovered that octopuses have chemical sensors on their arms. These help them gather information about their environment. As Thompson pointed out, “Octopuses hunt by ‘tasting’ with receptors on their suckers.” The octopus in this footage was very interested in the tasty sardines inside the canister and eagerly tried to find a way in.

Moving the BRUVS setup is no easy task. These cameras weigh between 10 to 15 kg due to the lead weights. It’s impressive that the octopus could move it at all!

Recent studies show that octopuses display remarkable problem-solving skills and adaptability. For instance, a 2021 study published in the journal Nature found that octopuses can learn from experience, adjusting their strategies in hunting and interacting with their environment. This adds to our understanding of their complex behaviors.

The fascination with octopuses doesn’t end here. Social media has buzzed with reactions to videos showcasing their intelligence. Clips show them escaping enclosures and even using tools, sparking conversations about their capabilities.
