WAUPACA COUNTY (WLUK) — Good news about the Big Falls dam: it’s holding steady! Emergency Management Director Zac Van Asten shared that the dam is secure and hasn’t breached. The embankments built from sand, dirt, and gravel are working well to contain the water.
Van Asten mentioned that the dam operator is collaborating with first responders. Recent updates show water levels are going down, and less rain is expected than initially predicted. Officials are staying on top of the situation.
To prepare, truckloads of materials have been brought in, and community members have even donated supplies. “Everyone is coming together to help,” Van Asten said. It’s heartening to see such unity in challenging times.
A flash flood warning was issued for the area, effective until 4:45 p.m. Authorities are encouraging residents to sign up for alerts through the Waupaca County website.
Van Asten’s team got the first alert around 8:40 a.m. Upon arrival, they assessed the situation quickly. “We’re tackling this step-by-step and making real-time decisions,” he explained.
Crews are actively placing sandbags along the riverbank to prevent any potential overflow. If a breach were to happen, towns like Symco, Manawa, and New London could be impacted.
Residents in low-lying areas below the dam should seek higher ground immediately. A shelter has been set up at Clintonville High School for those needing a safe place. Evacuations are also underway in parts of Weyauwega, especially for those living near Guth Road and Kurth Drive.
The National Weather Service is working with county officials, closely monitoring the forecast to predict possible risks. This collaboration is crucial for keeping the community informed and safe.
