WAYCROSS, Ga. – The winter storm that hit Southeast Georgia and North Florida has left many residents dealing with road closures, power outages, and unsafe driving conditions. It started late Tuesday night and continued into Wednesday morning.
One of the hardest-hit spots was a local business, Taylor Pools in Waycross. Employees reported that the roof of the building collapsed early Wednesday during the heavy snowfall.
Located at 1015 Knight Ave., Taylor Pools had only moved into the building about nine months ago. Staff confirmed that the roof gave way around 4 a.m. and that the owners quickly reached out to law enforcement for help.
Images from the scene show significant damage, with large cracks visible at the top of the building. Areas of the roof sag dangerously close to the ground, and many doors are completely caved in.
In the wider area, snow began to taper off around 8:30 a.m., but ice and snow remain on the roads. These conditions make driving particularly hazardous, especially on less-traveled routes. As of midday, temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, meaning the icy conditions will likely persist through the day.
Power outages have also been a major issue. Over 8,500 customers in Brunswick and thousands more in St. Simons Island and Folkston have experienced interruptions in service.
For those seeking shelter from the cold, the Waycross Police Department Courtroom is open to the public. If it fills up, the city auditorium will be used as an additional shelter.
