Waymo is testing a new feature to include Google’s Gemini AI chatbot in its autonomous vehicles. This integration aims to create a helpful assistant for riders during their trips, according to researcher Jane Manchun Wong.
While exploring Waymo’s mobile app code, Wong uncovered details about this integration, dubbed the “Waymo Ride Assistant.” It comprises over 1,200 lines explaining how the AI should behave in the car. Though not publicly available yet, the blueprint suggests this assistant could do a lot more than just chit-chat. It may answer questions, adjust settings like temperature, and provide comfort where needed.
Julia Ilina from Waymo said their team continually experiments with features to improve the rider experience. “Some of these may or may not come to our rider experience,” she noted. This is not the first time Waymo has utilized Gemini; it has already helped train their vehicles to handle complex driving scenarios.
Gemini is designed to communicate in a straightforward, friendly manner. The AI can greet riders using their first names and access their trip history to make the experience personal. However, certain functions like changing the route or adjusting seats are not currently part of Gemini’s commands. If riders request unavailable features, the assistant will respond with encouraging phrases, indicating it will improve in the future.
Wong pointed out that Gemini will clearly differentiate itself from the vehicle’s driving system. For example, if asked about the car’s sensors, Gemini will refer to the Waymo Driver instead. This design ensures a focused, user-friendly encounter, keeping the ride experience simple and stress-free.
The assistant won’t handle real-world tasks like ordering food or making reservations. However, it can answer general questions, from weather updates to trivia about landmarks. This aligns with the growing trend in the tech industry, where companies like Tesla are also adopting AI assistants. Tesla’s Grok, for example, focuses on providing a conversational experience, unlike Gemini, which aims for more practical, ride-centered interactions.
As more tech firms explore these integrations, the future of riding in autonomous vehicles seems promising. We may soon see how AI can enrich our daily travels, offering comfort and convenience in previously unseen ways.
