Zach Cregger’s new film, “Weapons,” has taken the box office by storm, earning $42.5 million in its opening weekend across 3,202 theaters. Internationally, it grossed $70 million. Warner Bros. In a surprising turn of events, Disney’s “Freakier Friday,” the sequel to the 2003 classic, claimed second place with $29 million from 3,975 theaters. This fun body-swap comedy brings back Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis for another round of family hijinks.
Market analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted that innovative marketing and strong social media buzz played a big role in both films’ successes. “These films were crafted for immediate reactions, and audiences didn’t hesitate to share their feelings online,” he explained.
“Weapons” dives into the eerie happenings in the small town of Maybrook, where 17 kids mysteriously disappear at 2:17 AM, leaving a community grappling with the aftermath. The film blends horror and existential humor, striking a chord with viewers. Dergarabedian added, “People are excited about a variety of films. It’s appealing to see both horror and comedy topping the charts.”
Cregger, who received praise for his earlier film, “Barbarian,” has continued to impress filmmakers and critics alike. “Weapons” opened with strong reviews, holding a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which certainly fueled the buzz.
Warner Bros. has shifted its strategy this year and is enjoying a resurgence. Earlier hits like “A Minecraft Movie,” which debuted with $157 million, helped set the stage for such triumphs. Jeffrey Goldstein from Warner Bros. remarked, “This is an example of how to roll out a successful summer lineup.”
Despite being dethroned, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” still performed well, bringing in $15.5 million in its second weekend. Its strong opening of $118 million had initially set high expectations.
