Netflix’s much-anticipated “Skyscraper Live” featuring free solo climber Alex Honnold has been postponed due to rain. The event will now take place on Saturday night in the U.S. (Sunday morning in Taiwan).
In an official statement, Netflix said, “Due to weather, we are unable to proceed with today’s Skyscraper Live event. Safety remains our top priority.”
Rain is a concern, even during Taiwan’s dry season. While January is generally favorable, forecasts indicated moisture around the time Honnold was scheduled to start his climb. Thankfully, tomorrow’s weather looks promising with sunny skies expected.
Safety is the top priority for the team. James Smith, head of adventure at Plimsoll Prods. Ltd., mentioned, “We want Alex to be 100% comfortable. If conditions aren’t right, we’ll delay.”
Jeff Gaspin, Netflix’s VP of unscripted content, compared the live broadcast to launching a space shuttle. There’s only a small window for such events; climbing is much harder during Taiwan’s rainy season from April to September.
Honnold, famous for his daring climbs without ropes, gained fame from the Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo,” which showcased his ascent of El Capitan. This new live event will follow him as he attempts to scale Taipei 101, the tallest building in Taiwan and the 11th tallest in the world at 1,667 feet.
As viewers await this breathtaking event, they are reminded that nature can sometimes throw a wrench into plans. With thrilling climbs like Honnold’s, it’s essential to prioritize safety above all else.
