Weber State Shines: Awarded by Department of Education for Outstanding Student Outreach Initiatives

Weber State University (WSU) in Ogden is making waves with its commitment to helping students succeed. Recently, the U.S. Department of Education recognized WSU for its impressive outreach efforts aimed at increasing student graduation rates.

Last fall, the Department launched a program to celebrate colleges that are working hard to eliminate barriers for students. WSU stood out among 6,751 schools nationwide, being the only institution in Utah to receive this honor. Overall, 200 schools were recognized for their dedication to student access and success.

Jessica Oyler, WSU’s vice president for Student Access & Success, highlighted the university’s proactive measures. Over the past five years, WSU has run text messaging campaigns to keep students informed and engaged. They have also increased the number of academic advisors by 60%. This strategic plan focuses on closing graduation gaps, especially for first-generation students, those eligible for Pell grants, and underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.

One tool used to support students is regular check-in messages. These texts and emails remind students to meet with advisors, schedule tutoring sessions, or register for classes. WSU also sends out surveys to assess how students are connecting with their peers and progressing through the school year.

WSU’s outreach extends beyond the campus. They’re working to make college more affordable for local high school students. The university offers a Concurrent Enrollment program, charging only $5 per college credit hour. This allows high school students to complete their associate’s degree before they even graduate high school. Each year, WSU provides 130 Concurrent Enrollment courses.

This recognition means a lot to Oyler and the entire WSU community. “It shows the hard work we’ve put in to meet our students where they are,” she said. “This celebration is a reflection of the strong connections our faculty and staff build with students every day.”
