Trine University has a new vice president for student affairs: Dr. Amy Heavin. This change comes as the university prepares for Tony Kline, Ph.D., to take over as president on June 1.
Dr. Heavin isn’t new to the university. She has been the assistant dean for academics since 2025, focusing on the Office of Student Success. In her new position, she will oversee various departments, including housing, student counseling, and engagement.
“Dr. Heavin is a strong leader with a proven history of creativity and organization,” said Dr. Kline. “Her values align with Trine’s mission to support students.”
Dr. Heavin shared her excitement for the role. “Combining these areas will enhance the student experience even more. I’m grateful for Dr. Kline’s trust in me and am excited for what’s next,” she said.
Dr. Heavin joined Trine in 2022 to launch the Transition to Teaching (T2T) program. Before that, she was the principal at Ryan Park Elementary School and earned accolades like Indiana’s District 3 Elementary Principal of the Year in 2018.
Her background is impressive. She holds a Ph.D. and M.Ed. in educational leadership from Indiana State University, along with a Bachelor of Musical Arts from DePauw University.
Education leaders often highlight the importance of strong leadership roles in universities. Research shows that effective student affairs leaders can significantly impact student retention and success. A 2020 study found that institutions with engaged leadership saw a 10% increase in student graduation rates.
As Dr. Heavin steps into this broader role, her leadership will likely shape Trine’s future and improve many students’ experiences on campus.
