Marcus Wertheim Drafted by California Redwoods
Marcus Wertheim, a senior on the Brown men’s lacrosse team, recently made headlines. He was picked in the fourth round as the 26th overall pick by the California Redwoods during the 2026 Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) College Draft.
“Marcus is a leader, winner, and an elite competitor,” said Jon Torpey, Head Coach for Men’s Lacrosse at Brown. “He is made for the PLL, and we can’t wait to see him shine!”
Wertheim has had an impressive college career. Over 49 games, he scored 59 goals and provided 48 assists, totaling 107 points. Notably, he hit his 100th point in a match against Princeton on March 28. This season, he set personal bests in goals, assists, points, and shots on goal. Currently, he ranks fifth in the Ivy League, with 18 assists and an average of 1.64 assists per game.
Wertheim is not just a standout player; he also holds a special place in Brown’s history. He is only the second player from the program to be drafted in the PLL College Draft, following Ryan Aughavin in 2022. Since the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) merged with the PLL in 2020, Wertheim becomes the 18th player from Brown to enter a draft. Below is a list of other notable draft picks from Brown:
- Ryan Aughavin, 2022 (29th)
- Michael Brown, 2020 (17th)
- Dylan Molloy, 2017 (1st)
- And several others dating back to 2002.
This rise in Brown’s lacrosse presence highlights a growing trend in collegiate sports. Beyond just individual accolades, many players now find pathways to professional leagues, fueled by increased support and visibility for lacrosse. Following the PLL’s expansion, the league aims to showcase not only talent but also the vibrant communities that support these athletes.
In a recent survey, 62% of lacrosse fans expressed excitement about the future of the sport due to the PLL’s innovative approach and the increasing media coverage. This buzz around professional lacrosse is a promising sign that interest in the sport continues to grow.
As Wertheim transitions into the professional realm, fans and followers are eagerly anticipating his next moves on the field, proving that dedication and hard work truly pay off.
