Wes Anderson recently shared his thoughts on former President Donald Trump’s proposed movie tariff during a press conference for his new film “The Phoenician Scheme.” He made a witty remark about customs, asking, “Can you hold up the movie in customs? It doesn’t ship that way.” This comment sparked laughter among the audience.

“The Phoenician Scheme,” which was partly filmed in Germany, features a talented cast including Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, and newcomer Mia Threapleton, the daughter of Kate Winslet. Del Toro plays a wealthy businessman named Zsa-zsa Korda, known for surviving multiple assassination attempts, while Threapleton portrays his estranged daughter, Sister Liesel, described as a quirky nun with a taste for alcohol and cigarettes. Cera is the duplicitous tutor, Bjorn Lund.

When asked about his film’s inspiration, Anderson reflected on the darker themes of capitalism and power dynamics, revealing that he and co-writer Roman Coppola initially wanted to explore a more serious story about the consequences of a powerful business mogul’s decisions. “We need a psychiatrist’s couch to really answer this,” Anderson joked, highlighting the complexities of their themes.

At the heart of the film is the relationship between Del Toro and Threapleton’s characters. Del Toro shared how challenging yet exciting it was to play a character who transforms from a ruthless tycoon to a caring father. “There were so many options where to go,” he noted. “You just give everything you can to Wes, and he does his magic.”

Anderson also hinted at his next project with Coppola and actor Richard Ayoade, calling it “pretty dark” as well. The director, known for his unique filmmaking style, teased future collaborations with both Cera and Bill Murray, who was present at the event.

Interestingly, this film showcases how Anderson continues to attract a stellar cast, including Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and Scarlett Johansson, all of whom have been part of previous projects. As Anderson releases “The Phoenician Scheme,” it is clear that he remains a significant voice in cinema, blending humor with deeper societal themes.

The film will have a limited release on May 30 and will expand on June 6.
