Five students from West Liberty University recently took a big step in their aviation training by completing their first solo flights. This milestone is a significant moment in any pilot’s journey, marking not just skill mastery but also personal confidence.
Tasha Taylor, the Aviation Coordinator at WLU, emphasized this achievement, stating, “A first solo flight is a defining moment in every pilot’s training.” It shows that these students are ready to pursue their careers in aviation.
The students who reached this milestone are Brady Bauer, Luke Miller, Jeremy Ratcliffe, Isaiah Zelaski, and Brock Bauer. Their accomplishments are part of a joint aviation program with Marshall University, launched in Fall 2025. This program aims to address the increasing demand for skilled pilots in both the local and national job markets.
In addition to flight hours, students engage in comprehensive studies covering aviation science, safety, and operations. This thorough training prepares them for the competitive aviation field.
Cathy Monteroso, WLU’s Provost, expressed pride in the students’ achievements, noting the quality of instruction and the students’ dedication. “These solo flights mark a significant achievement for our students and the aviation program,” she said.
The aviation sector is growing. Recent data shows that the demand for pilots is expected to increase by 8% over the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Such growth highlights the importance of programs like those at WLU.
