PARKERSBURG – West Virginia University at Parkersburg (WVUP) celebrated its largest graduating class during the spring 2026 commencement. The ceremony honored 645 graduates, who earned 760 credentials ranging from associate and bachelor degrees to certificates.
A record-breaking 252 graduates participated, with 97 achieving cum laude, 82 magna cum laude, and 36 summa cum laude honors. These accomplishments reflect not only academic excellence but also dedication and resilience.
Trista Scarberry, president of the Student Government Association, emphasized the importance of viewing their degrees as a testament to hard work. “Your degree is more than just a piece of paper. It represents who you are and the effort you’ve put in,” she remarked.

In her address, WVUP President Torie Jackson encouraged students to think beyond labels and focus on their contributions to the community. “Define yourself by your character, not just your title,” she advised. Jackson believes that education opens doors, but how graduates choose to lead their lives will define their true impact.
Jermaine Ford, president of Florence-Darlington Technical College, delivered the commencement address. As a first-generation college graduate himself, he spoke about the keys education provides. “Education is the most powerful key in the world,” Ford said, urging students to actively use their opportunities to shape their futures.
Ford also highlighted that closed doors can serve as redirections rather than endings. This perspective encourages graduates to keep moving forward, even when faced with challenges.
The university granted a mix of degrees: 488 associate degrees and certificates, 152 bachelor’s degrees, and 120 graduates from professional credit programs. This diverse output showcases the institution’s commitment to a wide range of educational paths for its students.
In addition to recognizing graduates, WVUP honored several individuals for their exceptional contributions:
– Rebecca Deem McGinnis and Brian Hackathorn received honorary bachelor’s degrees for their leadership roles in developing the Innovation and Technology Center.
– Katie Life was named the Bernard P. McDonough Foundation Outstanding Faculty Member for her innovative teaching methods.
– Dan Williamson received emeritus status after 43 years of dedicated service to the institution.
The spring commencement not only marks a significant milestone for graduates but also signals a commitment to community growth and educational excellence. As they step into their futures, the lessons learned during their time at WVUP will continue to guide them.
