In Pike Township, residents are raising concerns over a proposed data center that would replace a valuable urban forest. American Tower wants to build a 20,000 square-foot data center on a site currently filled with trees. Local advocacy group Protect Pike Township warns this could worsen flooding and air pollution thanks to the use of diesel generators.
Developer interest in Indiana is surging, as it’s seen as a hotspot for data centers due to its affordable land. The City-County Council will soon debate the rezoning proposal.
Counties Implement Data Center Moratoriums
Some counties in Indiana are taking a proactive approach by enacting moratoriums on data center developments. For instance, White County recently approved a ban after facing significant public opposition to a proposed project that would require rezoning nearly 300 acres. This brings the total to three counties—White, Marshall, and Putnam—taking a stand as they assess the potential impact of these projects on local resources and infrastructure.
Since 2019, Indiana’s state government has encouraged data centers through tax breaks, but many rural residents fear for their water supply and power grids. It raises an important question: who really decides what happens in these communities?
Massachusetts Advances Climate Education
In Massachusetts, exciting strides have been made in climate education. Recent legislative proposals aim to introduce climate science into classrooms, focusing on disadvantaged communities hit hardest by climate change. The plan includes creating a dedicated fund and setting up a Climate Literacy Advisory Council. If accepted, this could transform how climate issues are taught and understood in the state.
Australia’s New Environmental Reforms
On the other side of the globe, Australia has passed significant environmental reforms. The country updated its Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to set clear standards against unacceptable environmental impacts. This change aims to align economic growth with ecological protection. Minister Tanya Plibersek emphasized the importance of recognizing the interconnection between a healthy environment and a thriving economy—an inspiring model for countries worldwide.
