In December 2024, the Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) made a big decision. They prioritized the Wisconsin Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (WI LFPA) for the coming years. This program has made a positive impact on farmers and communities over the last two years, and WFU wants to keep it going.
The WI LFPA has helped many people. Here are some key highlights:
- 289 farmers and growers have participated.
- 72 counties and tribal nations in Wisconsin have received aid.
- 254 food access partners have benefited from the program.
- $4.18 million worth of local food has reached families in need.
While the USDA has promised to keep funding the program, there are recent concerns about changes that might affect this support. WFU’s involvement will wrap up in June 2025, but they will keep advocating for the program by educating state lawmakers about its importance.
WFU is asking everyone to help continue this program in several ways:
1. **Send a Letter of Support**: WFU has set up a way for community members to sign a letter supporting the WI LFPA. This letter will go directly to legislators, showing that many people care about keeping this program alive.
2. **Join the Lobby Day on March 4, 2025**: WFU is organizing a gathering in Madison for family farmers and rural advocates. This event will focus on discussing important policy goals, including the WI LFPA. It’s a great chance to meet with state policymakers face-to-face.
3. **Attend Joint Finance Hearings in April 2025**: WFU will showcase the success of the WI LFPA during these hearings. They will encourage supporters to attend and share their experiences to help the program’s future. More details about the hearings will be shared later.
The WI LFPA has shown us how valuable local food systems are. It supports farmers and helps fight food insecurity in Wisconsin. Through continued advocacy and action, WFU aims to make sure this program stays strong for years to come.
