In this trial, every unread message counts towards the limit, whether it’s to one person or many. However, if the recipient responds, those messages won’t count against the cap. Users nearing the limit will receive a warning from WhatsApp. The company believes most average users won’t encounter this limit, as it’s common courtesy not to bombard someone with messages if they aren’t responding. Additionally, in August, WhatsApp started notifying users when someone not in their contacts adds them to a group chat.
