WHEELING – The Wheeling University men’s golf team is making history. Under the guidance of head coach Thadd Obecny, they are headed to their first-ever NCAA Division II National Championships in Boulder City, Nevada, from May 18-22. This achievement comes after an impressive third-place finish at the Atlantic/East Regional in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
Obecny, a former standout golfer, expressed his excitement about the team’s success. “Our goal at the beginning was to reach regionals. Once we did that, we aimed for nationals and hit that mark too,” he said. “Now we want to break into the top eight for match play.” This format pits the best teams against each other after the initial rounds.
The Cardinals have shown remarkable dedication. Obecny mentioned that their hard work has truly paid off. “From day one, the guys have been focused and driven. When players stay in the moment, they perform better,” he added. Sean Dobson, a graduate student from Lancashire, England, is a standout on the team, finishing the regional with a total score of 215. His leadership has been key to their success.
Statistics suggest that international players are becoming more common in collegiate golf. Obecny noted, “While foreign players aren’t necessarily more advanced, many teams are starting to recruit globally to find the best talent.” Players like Troy Loughry and Zak Collins also showed strong performances, further solidifying the team’s capabilities.
The upcoming championship will see 20 teams competing, including regional champions like Gannon University and other top schools from across the country. As the team prepares to leave on Thursday, they plan to practice on a different course first to adapt to the conditions in Nevada.
