Wheeling University is embarking on an exciting renovation for Bishop Schmitt Field, aiming to raise $2 million. They kicked off the fundraising campaign with a strong start, courtesy of two local businesses. Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration and WesBanco each pledged $500,000, bringing the total to $1 million right from the get-go.
The renovation plans include replacing the aging turf, resurfacing the surrounding track, and adding a new videoboard. This upgrade is vital, as the current turf has reached the end of its life. Athletic Director Carrie Hanna noted that resurfacing the track will restore areas for field events, allowing Wheeling University to once again host track and field meets.
The outdoor athletic complex also serves multiple community groups. For instance, Wheeling Central Catholic High School plays its football games at the field, and St. Michael Parish School uses the track for an annual fundraiser. Hanna expressed a desire for the Special Olympics to return once the renovations are complete.
Both Panhandle and WesBanco leaders shared their enthusiasm for the project. Robert Contraguerro Jr. from Panhandle emphasized the importance of this investment for both the university and the wider community. Michael Mistovich from WesBanco highlighted how critical Wheeling University is for local education and community bonds.
With these donations, Panhandle and WesBanco will receive naming rights to the complex. The late Bishop Bernard Schmitt’s name will continue to honor the facility, alongside the new contributors.
David Hendrickson, chairman of the Wheeling University Board of Trustees, reflected on the university’s resilience. He recalled times when people doubted its future. “They didn’t understand the spirit and standards of this school,” he said.
In a world where many institutions face challenges, Wheeling University’s commitment to improvement stands out. Renovating its athletic complex not only enhances facilities but also serves as a testament to community support and shared vision for the future.
