Wheeling University Welcomes Mike Geibel as New Dean of Students: What This Means for Our Campus Community

Mike Geibel has been named the permanent Dean of Students at Wheeling University, officially stepping into the role on July 1. Since arriving at the university in October 2019, he has led the men’s rugby team to two national championships and aims to enhance the student life experience further.

Wheeling University President Dianna Vargo praised Geibel, saying he is a respected member of the community. His leadership is expected to foster a sense of belonging among students.

Before becoming dean, Geibel served in various roles in Student Affairs at Eckerd College in Florida. His experience includes managing campus activities and club sports. He believes this background can help improve campus life at Wheeling University by increasing the number of events and activities available to students.

One of Geibel’s ambitions is to hold events every Thursday through Saturday, such as game nights, dances, and faculty-student socials. “Our goal is to create a vibrant campus atmosphere,” he explained. He also aims to maintain traditions like the Last Blast celebration.

Engagement with the surrounding Wheeling community is another priority for him. Geibel plans to provide shuttle services to local shopping areas, making it easy for students to enjoy off-campus activities. “We want students to explore the local culture and bring some of that back to campus,” he said.

An exciting aspect of his vision is to empower students in planning activities. “If a student is a yoga instructor or has a talent, we want them to share that with everyone,” he explained. This openness is expected to create a more inclusive atmosphere on campus.

Geibel, who holds degrees in international relations and political science, honed his event planning skills as a marketing coordinator before joining Wheeling University. His impressive background positions him well to enhance student engagement and community spirit at the university.

Looking at recent trends in college campus life, there has been a noticeable shift towards more community-oriented experiences. A survey by the American College Health Association found that 60% of students feel more connected to their campus when involved in activities. Geibel’s initiatives align perfectly with this trend, indicating a promising future for student life at Wheeling University.
