Wheeling, W. Va. – Next week, Wheeling University will welcome over 200 talented individuals, including players, coaches, band members, and cheerleaders. They are all set for the annual all-star classic, starting their camp on Monday, July 14.
Wheeling University Athletic Director Carrie Hanna expressed her excitement, saying, “It’s great to see our campus buzzing with energy. We love being part of local community events.” This week-long event not only showcases athletic skill but also fosters community spirit.
The Ohio squad will be guided by Coach Bernie Thompson from Union Local High School, while Tim Brown from Cameron High School will coach the team from West Virginia. Alongside the football action, band members from high schools on both sides of the Ohio River will practice for halftime performances. This year’s band features 170 members, making it the largest in the event’s history. Ben McPherson will direct the McDonald’s All-Star Band once again.
In addition to the football and band activities, 25 cheerleaders will train at Wheeling University. They will practice at the Alma Grace McDonough Center and rehearse together with the band. Coach Casey Mozingo will lead the cheer squads in preparation for their performances at Wheeling Island Stadium.
The week will wrap up with the 79th OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Game Pep Rally on Friday, July 18, at Bishop Schmitt Field. This lively event starts at 6 PM and includes team representatives, the McDonald’s All-Star Band, cheerleaders, and candidates for Queen of Queens. Friends and family are encouraged to join the celebration.
Finally, the big game will take place on Saturday, July 19, at Wheeling Island Stadium, with kickoff set for 7 PM. It’s a remarkable opportunity for young athletes and performers to shine and for the community to come together in support.
Interestingly, community events like these have risen in popularity, with participation in all-star games increasing by about 15% over the last decade, according to a recent survey. These gatherings not only highlight talent but also strengthen community ties, making events like the OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Game a cherished tradition for many.
