White House Raises Eyebrows Over U.N. Escalator Incident Involving Trump: Was It Really Just an Accident?!

A malfunctioning escalator and teleprompter caused a stir during President Trump’s visit to the United Nations in New York. As he and First Lady Melania Trump arrived, the escalator suddenly stopped, forcing them to climb the stairs. Shortly after, while speaking at the General Assembly, Trump humorously lamented his teleprompter issue, saying, “Whoever’s operating this teleprompter is in big trouble.”

These mishaps became a metaphor for Trump’s criticism of the U.N., which he deemed ineffective, equating the broken escalator and teleprompter to what he sees as the organization’s failure. He joked, “All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that stopped in the middle.”

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later suggested that if the escalator’s shutdown was intentional, those responsible should face consequences. She referenced a report that some U.N. staff might have joked about shutting it down. However, a U.N. spokesperson clarified that a U.S. videographer might have accidentally triggered the safety mechanism of the escalator.

Interestingly, a recent study by the Pew Research Center shows that public trust in international organizations like the U.N. has declined significantly over the years, particularly in the U.S. These kinds of incidents can exacerbate such skepticism. In fact, only 44% of Americans believe the U.N. effectively addresses global issues, down from 57% in 2018.

The U.N. did conduct a thorough investigation afterward. They confirmed that the escalator’s sudden stop was due to a built-in safety feature, and the teleprompter malfunction was under the White House’s control.

Despite his criticism, Trump acknowledged the U.N.’s potential, stating it could do much more than it currently does. His administration has been distancing itself from the U.N., withdrawing from various agencies and reducing financial support, raising questions about the future of U.S. involvement in global governance.

Such incidents remind us of the ongoing debates surrounding the effectiveness and accountability of international organizations, especially in a politically charged environment.
