LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently signed three important bipartisan bills. These new laws aim to protect health care access, support small businesses, and designate the wood duck as Michigan’s official duck.
“I’m dedicated to ensuring everyone in Michigan has access to quality health care and that our local businesses can thrive,” Governor Whitmer said. “Our rural areas are particularly struggling with a lack of health care workers. Federal cuts to Medicaid are raising costs for many. That’s why this bill will help 5,000 doctors keep practicing in Michigan and making a difference in their communities.”
The first bill, House Bill 5455, sponsored by Representative Rylee Linting (R-Wyandotte), affirms Michigan’s participation in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. This agreement speeds up the licensing process for qualified doctors planning to practice in multiple states. Without this step, Michigan risks losing 5,000 doctors who currently care for around 100,000 residents.
Next, Senate Bill 581, sponsored by Senator Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores), allows Harsens Island to use tax incremental financing. This approach helps to enhance and revitalize local communities by using the growth from property taxes to support development projects.
The third bill, House Bill 4044, introduced by Representative Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn), officially names the wood duck Michigan’s state duck. Once nearly extinct, the wood duck has made a remarkable comeback, with around 100,000 now living in the state. This change celebrates conservation successes and highlights Michigan’s rich wildlife.
According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the recovery of the wood duck is a testament to effective conservation efforts. These initiatives not only protect species but also engage local communities in environmental stewardship.
In addition to these legislative efforts, recent surveys show that Michiganders are increasingly concerned about health care access and local economic growth. An overwhelming 75% reported that they want more support for local businesses, which aligns with the new bills’ goals.
These legislative actions reflect a commitment to improving the lives of Michiganders, combining health care, community growth, and environmental conservation into a cohesive plan for the state’s future.
