The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda a “public health emergency of international concern.” This outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo virus, has resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds of suspected cases.
As of now, Ituri province in DRC has recorded 87 suspected fatalities and over 300 cases. Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba highlighted that this strain has no available vaccine or treatment, and its lethality can reach as high as 50%. Confirmed cases have also surfaced in Kinshasa, DRC’s capital, nearly 620 miles from the epicenter, as well as Goma in North Kivu province. Additionally, Uganda’s capital, Kampala, has reported two confirmed cases involving travelers from the DRC, one of which was fatal.
Ebola, a disease thought to originate from bats, causes severe bleeding and organ failure. It spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. This event marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC, which has seen around 15,000 deaths linked to the virus over the past five decades.
Experts are concerned that this outbreak could be larger than initial reports suggest. The WHO notes a high positivity rate among initial samples and an uptick in suspected cases. Medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders has called the situation “extremely concerning” and is preparing for a significant response.
As countries neighboring the DRC brace for potential spread, the WHO emphasizes the importance of cross-border screening. Countries are encouraged not to impose strict travel restrictions, which could drive people to find unmonitored routes.
In a recent survey from the Africa CDC, 74% of health professionals expressed doubts about their readiness to handle Ebola. This highlights a critical need for improved infrastructure and training in health systems across the region.
