Since taking charge, Pochettino has hosted two camps to get a better understanding of his players. The teams from October and November featured many familiar faces like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Antonee Robinson, all likely to make the final roster. However, the January camp offers a chance to evaluate newer talent with upcoming matches against Venezuela and Costa Rica.
Though a number of spots seem secure, surprises can happen. In the past, players like John Brooks and Julian Green made it onto the World Cup roster against the odds. With the unpredictable nature of international soccer, no player should be counted out just yet.
Currently, there are many players who could make a name for themselves and surprise everyone. Here are a few forwards, midfielders, and defenders who haven’t debuted for the USMNT yet but might catch Pochettino’s eye.
Forwards
The forward position looks much stronger than in previous years. Players like Pulisic and Tim Weah are established starters, and there are several young strikers making their mark. Folarin Balogun, Ricardo Pepi, Josh Sargent, and Brandon Vazquez are all scoring regularly.
One exciting prospect is Patrick Agyemang, who recently had a standout season with Charlotte FC in MLS. He shows great potential with an impressive scoring record, finishing the season with 10 goals and 6 assists. Emeka Eneli had a breakout season with Real Salt Lake, transitioning from a full back to a defensive midfield role. His solid passing and defensive presence make him a possible addition.
Add to the mix Cavan Sullivan, who recently made headlines as one of the youngest players in MLS history. He holds immense potential, but at just 16 years old, he may be a long shot for the World Cup. His brother, Quinn Sullivan, is also gaining attention, providing valuable contributions for Philadelphia.
Defenders
While the U.S. midfield looks strong, the defensive line has its challenges. There are reliable left-back options, with Antonee Robinson leading the charge. However, the right side is a concern, especially after Sergiño Dest’s injury.
George Campbell has shown promise during his time with CF Montréal, offering solid skill in tackling and aerial duels. He’s among the defenders to watch in the January camp.
If he opts for the U.S. team, Anrie Chase could bolster the defense, having received playing time with Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. His versatility and ball-playing abilities would be beneficial for the national team.
Goalkeepers
The goalkeeper situation is less settled than it once was. Matt Turner and Ethan Horvath have struggled to find consistent playing time lately. This makes the competition for spots quite wide open.
Matt Freese had a standout 2024 season, helping New York City FC through the playoffs with impressive performances. Chris Brady, who is now Chicago Fire’s first-choice keeper, has also improved his game significantly this past year.
