Amazon is reportedly working on a new smartphone, its first since the 2014 Fire Phone. This move comes at a challenging time for the smartphone market, which is expected to shrink significantly in the coming years due to a memory shortage crisis, as noted by IDC. Francisco Jeronimo, an expert at IDC, expressed doubts about Amazon’s ability to compete with established brands like Apple and Samsung. He believes that trying to compete on hardware or user experience is a tough path.

Inside Amazon, the project, known as “Transformer,” aims to integrate seamlessly with Alexa devices and enhance the shopping experience. However, there’s no word yet on when this device will launch or its pricing.

Historically, Amazon’s last attempt at a smartphone didn’t go well. The Fire Phone saw poor sales and was quickly discontinued. Many wonder if Amazon can learn from past mistakes this time around.

The team behind the new smartphone is part of Amazon’s ZeroOne unit, led by J Allard, a former Microsoft executive known for his role in launching the Xbox. Interestingly, they are also considering a simplified version of the phone aimed at reducing screen time, similar to the LightPhone, which limits features to just essential functions.

Jeronimo cautions that the market for “dumb” phones is small, saying actual sales in this area are negligible. He emphasizes that while digital detoxes are trendy, they attract only a small group of customers. He argues that Amazon should focus on a strategy that resonates more effectively with larger audiences.

An interesting insight from Jeronimo suggests that the smartphone could become a powerful AI device. This change would shift focus from just hardware to software and service integration, areas where Amazon has strengths. They could leverage their extensive ecosystem, which includes commerce, content, and cloud services, alongside their AI capabilities with Alexa. However, this opportunity isn’t without competition, as major players like Apple and Google are also advancing in AI technology.
