LONDON (AP) — The Booker Prize for fiction is making headlines again, with British author Andrew Miller and Indian writer Kiran Desai as the top favorites. This prestigious award celebrates literary excellence and offers both a £50,000 cash prize and significant publicity for the winner.
This year, six talented authors are in the running after over 150 novels were submitted. The judges include notable figures like Irish author Roddy Doyle and actress Sarah Jessica Parker.

With 2-1 odds, she stands just behind Miller. If she wins, she will join the ranks of two-time Booker winners like Margaret Atwood and Hilary Mantel.
In addition to Miller and Desai, the shortlist includes David Szalay’s “Flesh,” which looks at a man’s life over decades, Susan Choi’s “Flashlight,” Katie Kitamura’s “Audition,” and Ben Markovits’ “The Rest of Our Lives.” Doyle noted that these works address essential themes like migration and class, showcasing the human experience.
The Booker Prize, founded in 1969, has shaped writers’ careers, with past winners including Salman Rushdie and Ian McEwan. Initially limited to authors from the U.K., Ireland, and the Commonwealth, the prize opened to American writers in 2014, leading to some concerns about an American influx. However, this year’s shortlist features a balanced mix, with three American authors and Desai, who has spent significant time in New York.
