“Captain America: Brave New World” takes a bold step in the Marvel Universe, but it doesn’t quite reach the highs of earlier films in the series. Although Harrison Ford transforms into a rage-fueled character, the film has its shortcomings.
Anthony Mackie, who has been part of this universe for ten years, has stepped up as Captain America, taking over from Chris Evans. He brings a new edge to the role, showing both strength and vulnerability. However, the film struggles with its storytelling, bouncing from gripping suspense to chaotic action without a clear direction, resulting in a rating of ★★½ out of four.
The plot kicks off with the arrival of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, played by Ford, who’s trying to stabilize his presidency on a “Togetherness” platform. He needs to negotiate a global treaty to access a new element called Adamantium. However, his history of antagonizing the Avengers leaves him in a tricky spot.
Sam Wilson, Mackie’s character, has his doubts about Ross but decides to play nice. He is invited to a White House summit to discuss rebuilding the Avengers. Things go awry when his friend Isaiah Bradley, a Black super-soldier with a troubled past, becomes a target in an assassination attempt on Ross.
The film touches on significant themes, hinting at deeper social issues, but it fails to fully explore them. Instead, it throws in too many side plots, leading to a confusing narrative. The action sequences, like a showdown between Captain America and a vengeful Ross turned Red Hulk, feel over-the-top and distracting.
Despite its flaws, the cast shines. Ford brings a layered performance as Ross, and Tim Blake Nelson returns as Samuel Sterns, adding a compelling twist. Giancarlo Esposito stands out as a menacing mercenary, and Shira Haas delivers a powerful portrayal as Ruth Bat-Seraph, adding intrigue and complexity to the narrative.
Mackie himself is a standout, proving to be one of the coolest actors in the Marvel lineup. He nails the balance between being a symbol of hope while dealing with real-world pressures. His performance makes you wish for a stronger follow-up next time.
In summary, while “Captain America: Brave New World” has its entertaining moments and a talented cast, it ultimately falls short of the expectations set by the franchise. Here’s hoping Mackie gets a chance to shine in a more cohesive story in the future.
