On World Bee Day, bees carried on their busy lives, seemingly unaware of the threats they face. Despite their vital role in our ecosystem, bee populations have been declining for years. Experts point to several causes: pesticides, diseases, climate change, parasites, and a shortage of diverse food options. Bees aren’t just responsible for honey; they are essential for pollinating many plants that make up a large part of our diet. Sadly, many species of wild bees, crucial for this process, are endangered.

World Bee Day began in 2018, thanks to the U.N. General Assembly. The goal? To raise awareness about the struggles bees face and encourage people to help. Simple actions like planting pollinator gardens or supporting local beekeepers can make a difference.

May 20 was selected for World Bee Day because it marks the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer in beekeeping from Slovenia in the 18th century.

In Germany alone, bees contribute about 2 billion euros ($2.3 billion) to the economy. They play a crucial role in pollinating beautiful fields of yellow rapeseed that bloom each spring.

On this year’s observance, around 400,000 bees in rooftop hives in Cologne were hard at work. Matthias Roth, the chairman of the Cologne Beekeepers Association, emphasizes the importance of both honey bees and wild species. His organization has created nesting boxes to help solitary bees, which live independently, but Roth worries this alone isn’t enough.

“We must care for nature,” Roth stated, highlighting that urban life has distanced many from the natural world. He believes taking steps to protect wild bees is essential.

Recent studies show that changes in land use and increased pesticide use have worsened bee population declines. According to a report by the European Commission, about 40% of bee species are in danger of extinction.

As communities become more aware of these issues, social media platforms are buzzing with initiatives to support bees. Campaigns encouraging the planting of wildflowers and creating bee-friendly spaces are gaining momentum online.
