Why CBCI Responds: Christians Celebrate Indian Identity, Diverge from Hinduism Following Mohan Bhagwat’s Speech

The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) has expressed strong disapproval of Mohan Bhagwat’s recent assertion that “Bharat is a Hindu Rashtra.” They labeled his comments as misleading.

During a speech, Bhagwat, the head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), made remarks about the Sangh’s membership, suggesting only Hindus are welcome. He stated that while people of different faiths could join, they should leave their identities at the door. His remarks included a claim that everyone, whether knowingly or unknowingly, embodies ‘Bharateeya’ culture, implying that there are no non-Hindus in India.

The CBCI swiftly responded in a press release on November 10, denying any notion that Indian Christians are Hindus. They emphasized that Christians are proud of their identity as Indians but do not identify as Hindus. The statement referred to a Supreme Court ruling that rejected the idea of using terms like ‘Hindustan’ or ‘Hind’ to refer to India.

The CBCI rejected Bhagwat’s claim that India is a Hindu Rashtra and condemned attempts to redefine India’s secular identity. They urged all Indians, particularly Christians, to defend the country’s constitutional values.
