In recent years, more celebrities have been moving to Southeast Asia, sparking interest in this vibrant region. In her journey, she discovered a different cost of living. In 2022, the average monthly income in Vietnam was about 39,000 yen, much lower than in Japan. However, many expats find that local salaries can still sustain a good quality of life, particularly if they work with international companies.

In Vietnam, teachers earn around 150,000 yen monthly, while those in service jobs make about 100-200 yen an hour. Miue highlights the rise of the gig economy, with many choosing flexible work like driving motorbike taxis, which can yield about 150,000 yen a month. This evolving job market gives expats the opportunity to adapt their work schedules easily.

Economic factors play a big role in making the move. Miue points out that currency fluctuations can impact living costs significantly. Before the pandemic, one hundred yen was worth twenty thousand Vietnamese dong. Now, it’s a hundred twenty yen for the same amount. This shift means that managing finances is more critical than ever for people moving between countries.

Miue adds, “When exchanging yen for dong, fewer dong are needed. This greatly reduces the financial pressures for expatriates.” Additionally, she notes that savings accounts in Vietnam often offer attractive interest rates of around six percent annually. This feature can be appealing for those planning to save money.

Culturally, life in Southeast Asia can differ significantly from Japan. The influence of Buddhism is strong, and while it mingles with daily life, it’s not typically a barrier. Miue observes interesting cultural intersections, like seeing altars or incense offerings in public spaces. Expatriates who engage with local businesses often find a welcoming atmosphere. Although learning Vietnamese can enhance the experience, many locals are improving their English, making communication easier.

This trend towards moving abroad is especially popular among younger generations eager to explore new lifestyles. Southeast Asia brings a mix of affordability, job opportunities, and a slower pace of life that many find appealing.
