Residents in Eastern Canada are bracing for another hot summer. “When it’s in the 40s outside, it’s warmer in here. And, it just goes on for weeks," shared Julie Leggett from New Glasgow, N.S. According to a meteorologist from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the chances of having a warmer-than-normal summer are especially high in the East. Climate change is making heat waves more frequent and intense. Last summer, researchers studied 37 heat waves across Canada, investigating how much human activities have contributed to these extreme weather events. Their work, part of a rapid extreme weather event attribution system, helps inform adaptation strategies. Climate models compare today’s heat waves with those from the 1800s, a time when greenhouse gas levels were much lower.
The results show alarming trends. Four extreme heat events last year in Canada’s North were found to be “far more likely” due to human influence, while 28 events appeared to be much more likely. This year, in the wake of a four-day heat wave in Alberta, temperatures soared nearly 29°C, exceeding average temperatures by over 11°C. Bill Merryfield, a research scientist with ECCC, noted that today’s conditions made such an event two to ten times more likely.
As summer approaches, heat waves pose real dangers, especially for those without air conditioning. According to recent statistics, nearly 30% of Canadians lack AC, making them vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
