Why DC Studios’ Luca Guadagnino Film ‘Sgt. Rock’ Won’t Hit the Big Screen: What This Means for Fans

The hopes for the action war film Sgt. Rock have hit a snag. Originally set to start filming this summer, the project is now on hold, according to sources from The Hollywood Reporter.

Sgt. Rock, based on the popular DC Comics character, was in preproduction with Luca Guadagnino directing. Colin Farrell was cast as the lead, and the team was busy seeking actors for the roles of Easy Company, a unit known for fighting Nazi forces during World War II. Mike Faist, known for his work in Guadagnino’s Challengers, was also set to join the cast, along with a female French Resistance fighter.

The reasons behind the pause remain unclear. Some insiders have suggested that logistical challenges, particularly related to outdoor filming, played a role. However, there is hope. The project might be revisited later this year, with a potential shoot planned for summer 2026. There are also whispers that the lack of experience Guadagnino has with action films could have raised concerns for executives, despite the film’s modest budget of around $70 million — a relatively low figure by comic book standards.

DC’s top decision-makers, James Gunn and Peter Safran, were optimistic about Sgt. Rock, even adding it to their schedule after being impressed by the script by Justin Kuritzkes. This script is meant to reimagine the character and the World War II narrative, with Rock collaborating with the Resistance fighter to find the legendary Spear of Destiny, a mystical artifact linked to numerous legends. The race is on to secure it before it falls into Nazi hands.

Sgt. Rock, created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, made his comic debut in 1959 and is recognized as one of DC’s longest-running series. Throughout the years, various Hollywood heavyweights, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, have circled the character, but the dream of bringing him to the big screen is still on the horizon.

As the film industry navigates the challenges of production schedules and evolving narratives, it’s clear the story of Sgt. Rock has a long way to go before it finally reaches audiences.
