As President of the United States, I’ve made an important decision regarding our national identity. English has been the dominant language since our country was founded. Founding documents like the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were all written in English. So, it’s time we officially recognize English as our national language.
Designating English as the official language will help foster a sense of unity among all Americans. It encourages new citizens to learn and use English, which can help them achieve their dreams and participate more fully in society. Learning the language not only opens up job opportunities but also allows newcomers to connect with their communities, join in traditions, and contribute back to society. We celebrate the many generations of multilingual Americans who have learned English and passed it on to their children.
Having one official language will simplify communication and strengthen our shared values. This move makes sense for our government and society as a whole, promoting a cohesive culture for every citizen. Thus, English is hereby designated as the official language of the United States.
Let’s clarify some terms. For this order:
- Agency: This refers to any federal agency as defined by law, excluding the Executive Office of the President.
- Agency Head: This is the top official in an agency, like a Secretary or Administrator.
With this new official language designation:
- English is officially the language of the United States.
- Previous orders focusing on limited English proficiency are revoked. However, agencies still have the discretion to provide services in languages other than English if they choose.
- The Attorney General will update any previous guidance related to these changes.
It’s important to note that this order won’t undermine the authority of various agencies. They can still fulfill their missions without being forced to change their practices regarding other languages. This order will be carried out in accordance with existing laws and budgets.
This decision is aimed at enhancing our nation’s unity and efficiency. Together, we can foster a stronger and more cohesive American identity.
