Ishika Gupta recently hosted a lively party in India that showcased a growing thirst for alcohol-free experiences among Gen Z. The event sold out, attracting around 150 attendees who dressed in Coca-Cola-themed outfits, grooved to upbeat music, and even crafted their own Diet Coke combinations, taking inspiration from pop star Dua Lipa’s unique recipes featuring ingredients like pickle juice.
Gupta was onto something. A report from the Indian Council of Medical Research in 2023 revealed that about 10% of adults in India live with diabetes. This rise in health-consciousness has fueled a booming demand for drinks with no sugar. Gupta noted a shift from regular sodas to zero-sugar alternatives at social gatherings. “In every house party now, you see Diet Coke instead of the usual Coke or Sprite,” she pointed out.
Her enthusiasm for Diet Coke is matched by a noticeable trend on social media. Posts about her events have resonated with many, showcasing a collective desire for creative and entertaining moments, especially during uncertain times. Amid global tensions affecting supply chains, Gupta’s celebration provided a refreshing escape.
Interestingly, as natural gas supplies wane due to geopolitical issues, many in India are feeling the pinch. Gupta’s gatherings not only offer enjoyment but also reflect a generation looking for joy amid challenges. “I didn’t realize how many people would connect with these parties,” she shared.
Shruti Sharma, a marketing head at a restaurant in Gurugram, has noticed that younger crowds thrive on scarcity. “They find joy in the unexpected,” she explained. Following Gupta’s lead, Sharma is now planning to host another gathering, ensuring enough Diet Coke for all. Each ticket will be priced around $16, featuring two cans of Diet Coke, snacks, and Coke-themed decorations. Plus, it coincides with the release of Drake’s new album.
As this trend for alcohol-free socializing continues, it’s clear that Gen Z is reshaping the way we celebrate, making it not just fun, but also health-conscious.
