Why Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is Coming First: Insights from the Creator on the Remake Strategy for Future Titles

Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, recently shared insights about the surprise announcement of Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined. Fans were expecting news about remakes of Dragon Quest 4, 5, and 6, especially after the upcoming Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D remake. But Horii explained that the order of releases was simply a matter of timing.

During a live stream on the channel “Yuubou & Mashirito no KosoKoso Housoukyoku” with co-host Kazuhiko “Mashirito” Torishima, they discussed why Dragon Quest 7 was prioritized. Horii mentioned, “A lot of things are moving around, but it was just done first by chance.” This points to the creativity and strategic planning that goes into game development.

Mashirito hinted that the absence of 4, 5, and 6 in immediate production doesn’t mean they’re out of the picture. Horii was careful with his words, saying he couldn’t confirm anything further, stating, “I didn’t say it,” multiple times.

In the conversation, there was a mention of the complexity involved in remaking Dragon Quest 4. The game’s many story chapters could be part of the reason it’s taking longer to develop. Horii simply laughed in response, suggesting that development has its own pace, and they are focused on making the games fit with modern platforms.

This conversation has stirred excitement among fans. While nothing official has been announced for the remakes of 4, 5, and 6, the anticipation continues.

As the gaming landscape evolves, Dragon Quest remains a beloved series, with fans eagerly awaiting the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 set for release on October 30, 2025, and Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined on February 5, 2026.

Interestingly, remakes are becoming more popular in gaming. According to a recent survey by the International Game Developers Association, about 45% of gamers enjoy revisiting classic titles with updated graphics and gameplay. This trend shows that nostalgia plays a significant role in gaming today.

With the continuing interest in classic games, it’s likely that more remakes will follow, giving older titles a fresh life and introducing them to new players.
