Environmental activists are urging the government to find effective alternatives to polythene, highlighting the serious issue of plastic pollution in waterways across the country, including Chattogram. This call to action came during a rally on April 11, as part of the Global Climate Strike organized by “Fridays For Future–Bangladesh.”
Activists expressed frustration that, despite government promises for stricter regulations, meaningful solutions have not been implemented. As a result, many people still depend on polythene products. Over 30 organizations joined forces in Chattogram for this important event.
The rally’s theme, “End the Era of Fossil Fuels,” featured a climate march that moved through key areas, ending at the Central Railway Building (CRB). Activist Prof. Idris Ali spoke passionately about the environmental challenges facing Chattogram. He said, “This green CRB is a peaceful spot during hot days. Birds sing here at dusk. But Chattogram’s environment is under threat from unplanned development.”
He also noted that despite significant spending on water management projects, the city still suffers from severe waterlogging. Chattogram’s canals have shrunk dramatically from 25,000 kilometers to just 3,000. The message was clear: protecting rivers, hills, and nature is crucial.
In addition to addressing plastic use, speakers stressed the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources. There was a strong demand for stricter actions against illegal hill cutting and encroachment on rivers.
Recent data from environmental studies show that Bangladesh struggles with one of the highest rates of plastic waste in the world. According to a 2022 report by the United Nations, the country generates about 1.2 million tons of plastic waste annually, significantly impacting ecosystems.
The growing movement against plastic use shows how public awareness is shifting. Many individuals are now opting for reusable alternatives and taking part in local clean-up efforts. Social media trends reveal a rising commitment to sustainability, with many sharing their efforts to reduce plastic use and promote eco-friendly practices.
As the conversation around environmental protection grows, the push for change continues. With collective action, communities hope to see a cleaner and more sustainable future.
