Why Federal Tech Employees Are Choosing Resignation Over Supporting Musk and DOGE

More than 20 employees from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) stepped down recently. They refused to use their skills to undermine important public services.

In a joint resignation letter, the employees expressed their commitment to serving the American people and upholding their constitutional oath. They stated, “It has become clear that we can no longer honor those commitments.” They also raised concerns about the qualifications of new hires brought in to cut government size, labeling them as political ideologues without the necessary experience.

The departure included engineers, data scientists, and product managers. This mass resignation represents a significant challenge for Musk and his push to reshape the federal workforce. Additionally, court challenges are ongoing to halt efforts that threaten to fire thousands of government workers.

The employees previously worked for the U.S. Digital Service, created during President Barack Obama’s term to improve government technology after the troubled launch of Healthcare.gov. They joined government service to contribute positively but felt this was being jeopardized under the current administration.

After Trump’s inauguration, the staff described a troubling environment where they faced intense questioning about their qualifications and political loyalties by individuals associated with the White House. Many interviewers seemed young and more focused on ideology than improving government technology.

Recently, about 40 employees were laid off from the Digital Service office, which harmed the government’s ability to manage its technology effectively. The resignation letter highlighted that these skilled workers were responsible for enhancing critical services like Social Security and veteran benefits. Their departure poses risks to millions of Americans who rely on these systems.

About 65 employees remain, but many are involved in DOGE’s mission to reduce government size. A third of these employees quit in solidarity with their colleagues, stating they refuse to compromise essential government systems or endanger sensitive data.

Musk’s initiatives have shifted from the original ideas presented during the 2024 presidential campaign to a more aggressive approach. While he attempts to maintain some technical talent, layoffs primarily affected those in non-technical roles.

One laid-off engineer, Jonathan Kamens, suggested his dismissal was related to his vocal support for Vice President Kamala Harris. Kamens expressed deep concerns about Musk’s potential misuse of data accessed while in power.

Former officials from the U.S. Digital Service have noted how government processes operate differently than in the private sector. Quick and careless changes can have broader impacts when they involve public services. They emphasized the importance of careful implementation when dealing with government systems.

The U.S. Digital Service was designed to enhance services for citizens, like simplifying tax filing and improving veterans’ care. Its modified role in the current political climate emphasizes the ongoing struggle between improving technology and maintaining essential services amid significant bureaucratic shifts.
