Many young people today, including some Gen Z members as young as 19, are noticing unexpected gray hairs. This trend is being shared widely on platforms like TikTok, where gray hair is becoming a topic of conversation.

Typically, hair begins to turn gray in the mid-30s for Caucasians, late 30s for Asians, and mid-40s for Africans. Yet, premature graying is hitting some Gen Zers nearly two decades sooner. While some might view this early graying as a fun fashion statement, experts see it as a potential health concern.

Catarina Orr-Lee, an integrative health coach from Ohio, suggests that early graying could be a sign of mineral imbalances. In a TikTok video that gained over 7 million views, she pointed out that high levels of zinc and calcium, combined with low levels of iron and manganese, may contribute to gray hair. Copper might also play a role.

Dr. Viktoryia Kazlosukaya, a dermatologist in New York City, agrees. She explains that minerals like copper, zinc, and iron are vital for tyrosinase activity, an enzyme crucial for producing hair pigment. She mentions that individuals with iron-deficiency anemia often experience premature graying, but iron supplements can help restore natural hair color.

Oxidative stress is another factor. Chronic stress can lower copper levels, further affecting hair pigmentation. Genetics, health issues, thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, smoking, and vitamin B12 deficiency can also lead to gray hair.

To investigate mineral levels, Orr-Lee recommends a hair tissue mineral analysis test. This test can identify the mineral content in your hair and help pinpoint issues. However, she cautions against buying random supplements based on assumptions about your needs.

“Many people mistakenly think that over-the-counter supplements are the best way to get minerals,” she says. “In reality, food is the most effective source of essential minerals. Plus, indiscriminate supplement use can disrupt the balance of other minerals in your body.”
