Why Genetics Isn’t the Key to Obesity: Experts Emphasize the Importance of Lifestyle Changes

New Delhi: Obesity is more than just a genetic issue. Health and lifestyle choices play a big role in it. Experts stress that it’s a serious health problem, not just something that affects appearance.

On World Obesity Day, Dr. Nikhil Tandon, who leads the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at AIIMS in New Delhi, shared key factors contributing to obesity in India. He highlighted issues like disrupted body clocks, unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, and stress. All these factors are causing obesity rates to climb.

At an Assocham event on obesity’s health impacts, Dr. Tandon warned that adult obesity is on the rise. He emphasized the need for more education and open discussions about this issue. He also raised concerns about increasing obesity among children in India.

Anil Rajput, Chairperson of the Assocham National Council on CSR, reiterated that obesity is a concern being addressed at many levels. The government has introduced programs like FIT India, Eat Right India, Poshan Abhiyan, and Khelo India to promote balanced diets and active living. Rajput believes that as awareness grows, India can become healthier and more productive, aiming for a developed nation by 2047.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also touched on rising obesity rates in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast. He stressed the importance of prevention, as obesity can lead to serious health issues like hypertension, diabetes, and cancer.
