Whenever a smaller wrestler gets a shot at a world championship, some fans get upset. They question how a smaller star can compete with, or even defeat, bigger opponents. This criticism surrounded wrestlers like Daniel Bryan and CM Punk as they tried to break into the main event scene in WWE between 2011 and 2014. Today, some fans are already doubting Roxanne Perez’s potential due to her size.
This argument puzzles me. Pro wrestling is scripted. If a wrestler connects with fans and appears credible in the ring, why not support them? It’s just like enjoying any form of entertainment where we suspend our disbelief.
Take last night’s episode of Raw, for example. Goldberg made his much-anticipated return. In recent months, he spoke about the effort it takes to maintain his legendary image as a tough guy at nearly 60 years old. He acknowledged how challenging it is to stay in shape.
However, the reality is that Goldberg looked noticeably older. I was impressed by his high kick during his entrance, but things quickly went downhill. He walked to the ring with a limp and seemed to be struggling for breath, looking less imposing than the current champion, GUNTHER.
Goldberg didn’t appear to be in fighting shape. Instead of feeling excitement for a potential match, I felt a bit sad. GUNTHER will have a lot to carry during their upcoming retirement match on July 12.
To be fair, Goldberg didn’t take any bumps or get physical, so my impressions are based solely on his entrance and promo. Maybe he’ll surprise us all when it comes time to wrestle. He’s likely to appear on Raw again leading up to the big match, giving fans more chances to see his current condition.
How do you feel about Goldberg’s return? Can he realistically face off against GUNTHER? Share your thoughts!
