Environment groups are raising alarms about a massive wind farm planned near Portland, Victoria. The Kentbruck Green Power Hub is set to cover 7,500 hectares and could face serious opposition due to its proximity to protected wetlands and national parks.
Each of the proposed turbines will soar nearly 300 meters high—on par with the tallest buildings in Melbourne. A total of 105 turbines are planned, stretching over 25 kilometers of a wild coast adjacent to the Discovery Bay wetland.
Mark Bachmann, from the Nature Glenelg Trust, criticized the project’s placement. He notes the environmental risks to wildlife, particularly endangered species like the southern bent-wing bat. The area is crucial for numerous species and has a rich history of wetland restoration efforts.
While this project promises renewable energy with a capacity of 600 to 900 megawatts, it’s creating a significant social debate. Almost half of Australians oppose new wind farms due to perceived risks to communities and habitats, according to recent surveys. Community trust is key for renewable projects to succeed—something many feel is lacking in the Kentbruck proposal.
Supporters argue the project is necessary for meeting renewable energy targets. However, the Victorian National Parks Association warns that rushing projects without community input could harm biodiversity and tarnish future renewable energy initiatives.
Cultural concerns also loom large. The region is rich in Indigenous heritage. Artefacts and spiritual sites are at risk from this development. Local Gunditjmara man Shea Rotumah expresses deep concerns over the archaeological sites he has worked to preserve.
As the situation unfolds, the Kentbruck project’s fate remains uncertain. Experts point out that successful transitions to renewable energy rely heavily on social acceptance and thorough planning that respects both the environment and local cultures.
