Statement from Sam Hersh, Clean Transportation Program Manager
Ottawa | Today’s announcement of high-speed rail in the Ottawa–Montréal corridor is a significant step for Canada. This area is one of the country’s most populated, and now, Canadians will have a dependable alternative to short flights and driving.
From a climate standpoint, this project is a major plus. It’s designed to cut down vehicle use, enhance air quality, and help Canada meet its climate goals. Plus, it makes life easier and more affordable for people living in that corridor. We’re pleased to see a focus on clean transportation instead of continuing to build roads that contribute to high emissions.
High-speed rail should be the centerpiece of a national transit plan. This plan should link the new rail system with local bus routes and regional trains while prioritizing electric options and service improvements. For this project to work, ongoing federal support is essential for everyday transit systems feeding into it. Effective nation-building requires more than big announcements; it needs realistic investments in buses, commuter trains, and local transit services to provide true alternatives to driving.
Key Insights:
- A publicly owned, electrified high-speed rail line could generate over 50,000 jobs and boost Canada’s GDP by approximately $35 billion.
- This rail service could remove over 100,000 cars from the roads each year, leading to a significant drop in greenhouse gas emissions.
- Transit agencies across Canada are currently facing cuts and fare hikes due to declining federal funding.
According to a 2021 survey by the Canadian Urban Transit Association, 70% of Canadians expressed support for enhanced public transportation, indicating a desire for more sustainable travel options. Social media conversations around transportation have also shown that many people are eager for greener alternatives, highlighting a growing awareness of climate issues.
Investing in high-speed rail is about more than just transportation; it’s about building a sustainable future. By connecting communities and reducing reliance on cars, we can pave the way for a healthier environment and economy.
