John Couris, the CEO of Tampa General Hospital, shared his thoughts at the ViVE digital health event in Nashville. He pointed out that many companies are offering solutions without fully understanding the real challenges hospitals face. “We need partners who can grasp our issues and help us solve them,” he said.

Couris emphasized the importance of building deeper relationships with fewer partners instead of managing numerous programs and partnerships. He cited companies like GE HealthCare and Palantir as examples of effective collaborations.

The healthcare industry is adapting to funding challenges, especially as budgets tighten. Concerns grew last year about potential cuts, particularly in support for Medicare and Medicaid. Since many hospitals rely heavily on government funding, any reduction will significantly impact their revenues. This has made it harder for them to invest in digital health technologies.

Couris remained optimistic about the future but warned that funding changes could increase pressure on hospitals. “You can’t balance the federal budget without addressing Medicare. We need to prepare for that,” he stated.

A recent McKinsey report highlighted concerns about budget constraints that many health systems face. Budget issues are a significant barrier to investing in new technology. Couris advised entrepreneurs to think creatively about how to introduce innovative solutions in a cost-effective manner to this challenging environment.

With the healthcare landscape shifting, it’s crucial for technology firms to tailor their approaches. Understanding the needs of hospitals and providing solutions that are both valuable and affordable will be key to success in this new market climate.
