For 37 years, I’ve run a luxury massage business, but lately, things have changed. I’m working harder for less money. Let me share my journey.
I grew up in Sonoma County, California, then moved in with my mother in Las Vegas during my teenage years. After high school, I attended UNLV in the ’80s. It was a wild time, filled with cocktails, chaos, and life lessons.
In my mid-20s, I packed up and headed to Hollywood to pursue acting. But two years in, I felt the industry’s darker side. I learned that it wasn’t for me. Instead of giving in to the pressure, I took my skills and started my own typing service in college. Once in L.A., I hustled through various jobs, including court reporter, realtor, and even a waitress. Eventually, I combined my skills and launched Just What You Knead.
I moved to Santa Monica, drawn by the ocean’s beauty and the healthy lifestyle it offers. My business grew, and I expanded to a second studio in 2022. But the pandemic hit hard and forced me to close that location. Now, business is slower than ever. My rent skyrocketed 1,000%, yet I can’t raise my prices.
I’m up against cheap massage places that exploit workers. People expect excellence but only want to pay budget prices. The massage business is not easy on the body, yet I’ve persevered for decades.
As a single mother, my work keeps me grounded. I won’t leave Santa Monica because my daughter loves her school. Despite the challenges, I’ve kept my community close. We support each other, whether through healing practices or creative projects.
Recently, I picked up odd jobs to make ends meet. I got paid to scream for a horror film and to design a postcard for a friend working on promoting sustainable farming. I owe a lot to my loyal clients, who have helped keep my business afloat.
But now, without paying for ads, my visibility has vanished. Many people are struggling. For some, even enjoying the beach feels out of reach.
So, I’m back at it, taking comedy classes to expand my horizons. It’s all about creativity and resilience, especially in tough times.
Through highs and lows, I remain committed to my craft and my city. I believe in the power of community and healing, and I’m eternally grateful for the journey.
