In 2020, I replaced my old iPhone with a new one, and I’m still using it five years later. The device works perfectly, but it lacks one thing I really want: a ProMotion display. For those unfamiliar, ProMotion refers to a high-refresh-rate screen that makes everything look smoother.
Apple first introduced ProMotion with its Pro models. Since then, these phones have boasted 120Hz displays that can adapt to 1Hz for features like always-on displays. This capability enhances gaming and everyday tasks, making taps and swipes feel more fluid. Other smartphone brands have caught on, even offering high-refresh-rate screens in their budget models. Yet, iPhones remain expensive, requiring around $1,000 for this feature.
This poses a challenge for Apple. The last upgrade choice I faced was the iPhone 15 in 2023. It came with a Dynamic Island display cutout, yet it still lacked ProMotion. Despite improvements in camera quality and charging speed, I chose to keep my iPhone 12. I’m sure I’m not alone in this decision.
Data analyst Ross Young suggested that widespread adoption of Dynamic Island displays in the iPhone 15 wouldn’t come with ProMotion until at least 2024. He pointed to supply chain issues, but it’s worth noting that back in 2020, Google launched a $699 phone that included a 90Hz OLED screen.
Excitingly, all four iPhone models expected in 2025—iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 17 Air—are rumored to feature 120Hz displays. For me, this might finally be the year I upgrade. However, I can’t help but wonder how this shift will impact the iPhone lineup in the future.
Apple’s delay in bringing ProMotion to regular models might have been more about marketing strategy than logistical issues. With the iPhone 17 offering features that used to be exclusive to the Pro models, Apple needs to rethink its product differentiation. If the Pro versions lose their defining traits and simply offer telephoto cameras or larger screens, many might question their higher price.
Interestingly, during a recent discussion with Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, he hinted that Apple aims to transition towards a focus on the iPhone Air. Initially, it may have fewer cameras and shorter battery life, but over time, improvements could elevate the Air to flagship status.
This indicates that Apple might be eyeing a future where the Air and standard iPhones share similar features, but customers pay a premium for design and additional perks. As the landscape of smartphones continues to evolve, it will be intriguing to see how Apple navigates these changes.
