Why Jennifer Lopez Turned Down an Oscar-Winning Role: Her Regrets Revealed

Jennifer Lopez recently chatted with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show, covering a lot of ground, from her past romances to the buzz around Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show and her latest film, Kiss of the Spider Woman.

During their conversation, Stern asked her if there were any movie roles she turned down and later regretted. Lopez revealed that she was offered a part in Unfaithful, a 2002 thriller directed by Adrian Lyne. The film, which starred Richard Gere and Diane Lane, tells the story of a couple whose marriage falls apart after the wife starts an affair. Despite its success, grossing over $119 million globally, Lopez had her reasons for saying no.

“The script wasn’t good,” she said, referring to the writing by Alvin Sargent and William Broyles Jr., based on the earlier film La Femme Infidéle. However, she acknowledged that Lyne made it compelling in his own way.

Adding to the sting, Diane Lane received an Oscar nomination for her performance in the film. When Stern asked if that fact was tough for her to accept, Lopez answered honestly, “It haunts me a little bit. It’s like, ‘Why did I turn down working with Adrian Lyne?’” Reflecting on her past decisions, she admitted, “Who knows what was going on in my mind at that time?”

Back then, Lopez was in the spotlight, managing a thriving music and acting career. She had just starred in hits like The Wedding Planner and Angel Eyes. Around the same time Unfaithful was released, she also appeared in Maid in Manhattan and Gigli, the latter becoming a major box office flop for her.

Today, Lopez may be on the verge of turning heads again, as she is generating Oscar buzz for her role in Kiss of the Spider Woman. It seems like the award spotlight might be back on her soon.
