John Oliver recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live after winning two Emmys for Last Week Tonight. He shared a funny moment about having to keep his acceptance speech short due to a unique twist at the awards. Host Nate Bargatze announced that if any winner went over 45 seconds, money would be deducted from a charity.
Oliver managed to thank everyone in just 19 seconds. He said, “My main goal was to cost Nate some money. Whether it went to a good cause was secondary.” He admitted it felt great to contribute to the Boys & Girls Club of America, but he jokingly added that it wouldn’t have matters if the money went up in flames.
Kimmel pointed out that not all winners were as brief. Oliver laughed, saying, “I speak fast on the show, so I was in a good spot.”
They also touched on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show winning the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series, despite its cancellation. Oliver, who was backstage, expressed joy for Colbert’s win and even halted his interview to watch him speak.
“It was the right thing for him to win,” Oliver noted. “But wouldn’t it have been funny if you had won?”
Using humor, he poked fun at Kimmel by saying that while he wanted Colbert to win, he did get a kick out of imagining Kimmel’s face if he hadn’t.
After the Emmys, Rolling Stone criticized Bargatze’s bit, saying it created a negative atmosphere. The review suggested that it felt like the event was discouraging winners from showing their excitement.
With a lighter note, Oliver’s speedy speech and their fun banter reminded viewers how important humor and kindness are even at high-stakes events like the Emmys. For a deeper look into awards show dynamics, check out the full review from Rolling Stone here.
