Nearly 30 years after the original, a sequel to Happy Gilmore is finally here, and Julie Bowen, who played Virginia Venit, is still processing the news. When she first heard about Happy Gilmore 2, she assumed she’d be left out.

The original film features Adam Sandler as Happy, an unexpected golf champion, with Bowen as his love interest and PR director. When the trailer dropped at Netflix’s Tudum event, Julie recalled her initial thoughts: “I thought, ‘Well I won’t be in it.’” She expected Happy would have a new romance, joking that he could end up with a younger woman, like a cart girl. “My kids even told me about the rumor that Sydney Sweeney might be in it,” she shared.

While that casting rumor turned out not to be true, Julie was pleasantly surprised when she got the call to return. She jokingly said, “Are you sure? Come on.”

The sequel also brings in exciting new faces. Stars like Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Travis Kelce, Kym Whitley, and Eminem are all joining the fun. Julie admitted she’s a huge Bad Bunny fan and couldn’t help feeling starstruck on set. “I was like, ‘Oh, I can’t actually look you in the eye,’ and then I realized I probably made it worse,” she laughed.
